Sony Online Entertainment president John Smedley has revealed to MTV Multiplayer that the company is considering massively multiplayer online games for the PSP. We think it’s a world-class device… In the future, we see full MMOs that are designed for the PSP. However, before full-fledged MMOs, Smedley sees integration of existing online games with the handheld device, though the company hasn’t finalized any decisions. read more

Can the New DS Take-On the iPhone, PSP?- General

News last night that Nintendo plans to release a new model of it’s unbelievably popular DS wasn’t that surprising. But what was surprising is that a company whose beliefs seems so firmly rooted in attracting the broader, less tech-savvy general audience would decide to add music playback and picture taking to one of its core machines. What we still don’t know is if this is a Japan-only device or one headed for world release, something I suspect we’ll find out with the upcoming Nintendo press conferences. For years Sony and Nintendo have both argued, on some level, that the PSP and DS don’t really compete because the machines approach gaming in such different ways. But with the PSP gaining ground in Japan (Reuters reports that PSP’s unit sales exceeded the DS’s in five consecutive months through July) can the DS directly compete with it when it comes to those expanded features? Does Nintendo stand a chance in the realm of gaming and media devices? read more

PSP will get more games in 2009 - News - play. Sony’s John Koller has promised that the PlayStation Portable will get an increased games line-up in 2009, after 2008 showed a dramatic drop in the number of titles being released on the firm’s handheld format. Koller adds that the typical PSP user is now much younger than when the console was first released, with more non-traditional gamers and kids being lured by the format. We haven’t gone public with those, and many third-parties have not yet either because they’re concentrating on holiday, but we have a number of very strong titles coming. read more
