Some Floridians are being asked to pay back tens of thousands of dollars in federal disaster relief — plus interest — that they received after the 2004 hurricanes. The report featured Alan Johnson, who runs a 4-acre Central Florida facility nurturing and cultivating a large array of fern and tropical plants. During the hurricanes of 2004, the Johnson Nursery was seriously damaged. Johnson said he did what many others did and turned to the United States Department of Agriculture for federal disaster relief. On June 28, Johnson received the news that he had failed to purchase required crop insurance for 2006. Johnson or allowing equitable relief, the Johnson Nursery will be worse off today than had assistance never been given. read more
