On one side, there’s the engineers, and they run the company with little regards to the consumer, locking their hardware down with DRM and releasing products with absurd names made up almost entirely of random alphanumerical characters with little regard to branding. Then there is the management, which wrestles with Sony’s entrenched engineer culture, trying to somehow break the pigheadedness of a company where engineering — not branding, or design, or user experience — makes all the cogs turn. How else to explain Sony, as early as the beginning of the year, claiming they’d learned their lesson and were going to stop locking down their devices? If you have purchased Sony’s lovely update to its venerable PSP handheld, you were givena voucher to download your choice of three games. And it’s another black eye to Sony, whose draconian hardware protection practices have not only proven utterly futile — locking down the PSP didn’t stop pirates or hackers, it simply allied them together — but has been extremely damaging to the public’s perception of the company. read more
