But the PSP isn’t going anywhere, said Koller, and their mandate for 2008 is to continue encouraging the development of franchise games for the platform that aren’t ports, highlighting the large, high-resolution screen on the device and diversifying the delivery of PSP’s content, whether it comes via UMD or through Sony’s online store. While it’s no PS3/360 for games releases, I think it’s a brilliant second games system - I have my PS3 for home, and PSP for lunch at work or on the bus. While the lack of big releases at the moment (and don’t forget it’s still getting the Force Unleashed and the usual range of sports games) is a little concerning, the delay in seeing the change in the market to making games for a resurgent system (which is what the PSP is, whichever way you slice it) explains this well enough. And that’s why PSP games don’t show up as much as DS games on the charts. The iPhone is great with the accelerometer for those types of games that use them (Super Monkey Ball) just like the games on Wii are great for those that use them (Tennis) though for playing standard console games on a portable the layout is best on the PSP and if it is simply ports, so be it. read more
